Maro Engel takes the lead in the DTM Drivers’ Championship at Oschersleben

Maro Engel takes the lead in the DTM Drivers’ Championship at Oschersleben

  • Mercedes-AMG Performance Driver Maro Engel (GER) moved to the top of the Drivers’ Championship on Saturday and successfully defended his lead on Sunday.
  • A total of 20 cars lined up on the grid at Oschersleben. Maro Engel started from fifth, Jules Gounon (FRA) from tenth, Tom Kalender (GER) from 15th and Lucas Auer (AUT), who ran off the circuit on his fastest qualifying lap, from 16th.
  • As always, Sunday’s race, featuring two mandatory pit stops, offered plenty of strategic opportunities. Maro Engel and the Mercedes-AMG Team RAVENOL benefited the most. Driving the #80 Mercedes-AMG GT3, Engel pitted late on both occasions. A successful overcut during the second pit stop gained him two positions and secured second place.
  • Jules Gounon gained one position during the race to finish ninth. Lucas Auer made up the crucial positions during the second pit stop and finished 12th. Tom Kalender took the chequered flag in 18th place.
  • On Saturday, all four Mercedes-AMG Drivers started the race from the top ten: Maro Engel from third, Lucas Auer from fourth, Jules Gounon from sixth and Tom Kalender from tenth.
  • Maro Engel gained one position at the start. However, he lost that position to the car behind following a slight time loss during the mandatory pit stop and finished the race in third place. Lucas Auer finished fourth. Tom Kalender dropped to 13th after serving a penalty lap for exceeding the pit lane speed limit by 1 km/h. Jules Gounon was involved in a three-car incident in the opening phase of the race.
  • As a result, he was forced off the circuit and had to retire his Mercedes-AMG GT3 on lap 27.
  • Following the race weekend at Oschersleben, Mercedes-AMG Motorsport to lead all three DTM standings: Maro Engel tops the Drivers’ Championship with 145 points, Mercedes-AMG Team Winward Racing leads the Teams’ Championship with 205 points, and Mercedes-AMG heads the Manufacturers’ Championship with 277 points.
  • The second half of the 2026 DTM season got underway with two races on the 3.667-kilometre Motorsport Arena Oschersleben circuit.
  • Rounds 11 and 12 of the DTM season will take place at the Nürburgring from 14-16 August.

“It was a very good weekend for us. The qualifying performance on Saturday was also very strong with all four cars. Lucas Auer unfortunately didn’t quite put his qualifying lap together on Sunday. With the level of competition in the DTM field, that immediately means you’re no longer right at the front. Of course, we’ll enjoy Maro’s championship lead for a moment, but our focus is already shifting to the Nürburgring. We want to deliver another strong team performance there and being at the front once again.”
Thomas Jäger, Sporting Manager DTM, Mercedes-AMG Motorsport

“Saturday was a good day with fourth place. On Sunday, we struggled for pace – both in qualifying and in the race. Starting from 16th, we can be satisfied with finishing 12th. That was only possible thanks to the strategic decisions made by Mercedes-AMG Team Landgraf, and I’m proud of that. Now we need to analyse everything, keep working hard and be back on the top at the Nürburgring.”
Lucas Auer, Mercedes-AMG Team Landgraf #22

“I’m very happy. With two podium finishes, it was an incredibly strong weekend for me. A huge thank you to Mercedes-AMG Team RAVENOL. The team did an outstanding job today with the strategy and the pit stops. I'm particularly pleased that, after yesterday's long pit stop, which cost us an even better result, we were able to respond in exactly the right way today. Scoring points consistently is hugely important. Of course, I’m delighted to be leading the championship now. But the championship won’t be decided today, at the Nürburgring or at the Sachsenring. What matters is Hockenheim.”
