Since 1996, Mercedes-Benz and Mercedes-AMG have provided the Official FIA F1® Safety Car, setting the benchmark for safety in the pinnacle of motorsport. To mark the 30th anniversary of this unique success story, Mercedes-AMG continues this legacy with the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 PRO 4MATIC+. The exceptionally high-performance model from the GT family is the 14th Official FIA F1® Safety Car to carry the three-pointed star and will make its debut this weekend at the "Formula 1 AWS Hungarian Grand Prix" in Budapest. It succeeds the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series, which has served as the Official FIA F1® Safy Car since 2022 and has completed a total of 51 deployments. Most recently, the Black Series was in action in the first four laps of the 2026 Belgian Grand Prix.
The Mercedes-AMG GT 63 PRO 4MATIC+ has been engineered for maximum performance and outstanding drivability, making it ideally suited for use on the racetrack. Its 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine delivers 450 kW (612 hp) and a maximum torque of 850 Nm. The standard AMG High Performance Ceramic Composite Brake System ensures consistent and precise braking performance even under extreme loads. Power is transmitted via the AMG Speed shift MCT 9G transmission. For the first time in the history of the Official FIA F1® Safety Car, a fully variable AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive system is used. It provides optimum traction in both dry and wet conditions.

Exceptional agility and precision under the most demanding track conditions
In addition to its outstanding overall performance, the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 PRO 4MATIC+ is ideally suited to its role as the Official FIA F1® Safety Car thanks to its exceptional agility, precise turn-in, and outstanding driving dynamics. These inherent characteristics ensure precise controllability even under the most demanding track conditions and at high speeds. Designed for track days in standard production specification, the sports car from Affalterbach provides the ideal foundation to meet the ever-increasing performance and safety demands of Formula 1®.
Optimised aerodynamics and latest FIA-specification technology
A key feature of the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 PRO 4MATIC+ is the integration of the signalling system into the rear wing, combining high visibility with aerodynamic efficiency. Additional LED signal lights in the front area as well as the headlamps and rear lights further enhance visibility during racing operations. The green and orange light modules communicate different instructions and support interaction with the cars on track. While the orange signals indicate that overtaking is prohibited, the green lights allow the Safety Car to be overtaken. The system is complemented by additional flashing functions in the headlamps and rear lights, as well as camera technology integrated into the rear wing. All light modules can be dimmed continuously and adjusted to suit different lighting conditions. The already highly efficient aerodynamics of the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 PRO 4MATIC+ have been further developed for its role as the Official FIA F1® Safety Car. A new front splitter, a modified rear wing with an active flap, and aerodynamic elements at the front of the vehicle – known as dive planes – improve stability, particularly through high-speed corners and at high velocities. By directing airflow in a targeted manner, these elements generate additional downforce on the front axle.
The high-performance cooling system of the production vehicle already meets the demanding requirements of track use. In addition, AMG Active Ride Control with active roll stabilisation allows the suspension setup to be adjusted precisely to different conditions. For long-time Official FIA F1® Safety Car driver Bernd Mayländer, this translates into even more dynamic handling while maintaining a high level of driving safety and comfort.
For essential communication with race control in critical situations, the vehicle is also equipped with advanced FIA-specific systems. The specially developed vehicle electrical system integrates radio communication, GPS, and camera technology, as well as a central control panel in the centre console. The FIA tablets, which are now slightly larger than their predecessors, enable the driver to control the systems quickly and intuitively. Safety-related equipment includes a roll cage, six-point safety harnesses, and racing bucket seats from RECARO. An inboard fuel tank, Makrolon glazing for the windscreen and rear window, as well as further measures, provide the basis for racing operation. The Official FIA F1® Safety Car runs on Pirelli tyres – just like the F1® cars. The car is equipped with the ultra-high-performance Pirelli P Zero R tyres, engineered for track performance and precise steering feel with a dedicated dual-tread compound, validated together with Mercedes-AMG at the Nürburgring and in Nardò.
First outing in Budapest: New Official FIA F1® Safety Car makes its debut in an anniversary livery
At the Hungarian Grand Prix at the Hungaroring, two modified Mercedes-AMG GT 63 PRO 4MATIC+ cars are on standby for use in the event of an emergency. Both safety cars feature a specially developed anniversary design that visually celebrates the 30-year history of Mercedes-Benz and Mercedes-AMG Safety Cars in Formula 1®. The black paintwork is complemented by red vinyl graphics. Alongside the lettering from partner CrowdStrike, the 30th-anniversary logo is integrated onto the bonnet, roof, and rear wing.
