Extensively modified V8 biturbo engine
At the heart of the extensively modified performance SUV models is the comprehensively enhanced M177 Evo engine. The technical refinements with which Mercedes-AMG is developing the iconic 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine for the future include a new flat-plane crankshaft. It reduces rotating masses and thus improves revving ability and response.
In addition, the technical refinements include an optimised injection system, newly designed intake and exhaust ports, a revised intake camshaft as well as improvements to the compressor wheel and turbocharger housing. The result is more precise response, increased efficiency and linear power delivery. Thanks to advanced exhaust gas aftertreatment with a particulate filter fitted as standard worldwide, the M177 Evo also meets current emissions standards.
Sovereign V8 power remains firmly in place: with 450 kW (612 hp), the M177 Evo achieves the peak output of its predecessor and combines it with more spontaneous response, high revving ability and powerful delivery across a broad engine-speed range. The maximum torque of 850 Nm is available between 2,500 and 4,500 rpm. At the same time, the further-developed powertrain with a particulate filter fitted as standard worldwide is designed to meet current emissions standards.
A further 17 kW (23 hp) of output and 205 Nm of torque are contributed by the mild-hybrid technology with integrated starter-generator (ISG) 2.0 and additional 48-volt on-board electrical system. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds (GLE 63 S) or 4.2 seconds (GLS 63) and an electronically limited top speed of 280 km/h3 underline the performance capability of both models.
A new AMG Performance exhaust system provides the characteristic AMG V8 sound. With the standard-fit flap control, the driver can adapt the sound character – from discreet in Comfort mode to powerful and emotive in Sport+ mode.
Redesigned front end with characteristic AMG radiator grille and exclusive LED light signature
The sharpened performance design gives the GLE 63 S 4MATIC+ and GLS 63 4MATIC+ even greater presence. The redesigned front end with AMG specific radiator grille, larger air intakes and exclusive LED light signature underlines the distinctive appearance of the high-performance SUV models. At the rear, the twin tailpipe trims of the AMG Performance exhaust system and the diffuser-look finish emphasise the dynamic character.
The standard equipment of the GLE 63 S and GLS 63 also includes AMG RIDE CONTROL+ suspension. With air suspension and adaptive damping, it continuously adapts to the driving situation and drive programme – from sporty and firm to comfortable. In “Trail” mode, the vehicle level is raised by 55 millimetres for off-road use. In “Sport” and “Sport+”, and from 120 km/h in “Comfort”, the vehicle is lowered by ten millimetres – for improved aerodynamics, lower consumption and greater stability.
Agile handling thanks to AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL and AMG rear-axle limited-slip differential
The GLE 63 S 4MATIC+ and GLS 63 4MATIC+ also feature AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL. The active roll stabilisation reduces body roll in bends almost completely and, together with precise suspension and steering tuning, ensures particularly dynamic handling. Additional agility comes courtesy of the standard-fit, electronically controlled AMG rear-axle limited-slip differential. It distributes torque variably between the rear wheels and reduces slip without braking intervention.
Permanent AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive with fully variable torque distribution also ensures optimum traction. Specially developed drive shafts ensure high load capacity even under extreme conditions. In addition, the driving experience can be influenced via six AMG DYNAMIC SELECT drive programmes: “Comfort”, “Sport”, “Sport+”, “Slippery”, “Trail” and “Individual”.
Exclusive wheel selection, performance-oriented interior
An exclusive selection of AMG light-alloy and AMG forged wheels is available for the high-performance SUVs. Wheel dimensions of up to 22 inches are available for the GLE 63 S. The GLS 63 can be equipped with wheels up to 23 inches in diameter.
In addition to the latest-generation AMG Performance steering wheel, the interior is characterised by seat upholstery in sporty Exclusive nappa leather in black, macchiato beige, beech brown and red pepper or Exclusive nappa leather Style in black and macchiato beige. Exclusive MANUFAKTUR versions in yacht blue, tartufo brown or carmine red extend the selection.
The MANUFAKTUR individualisation programme also opens up a wide range of possibilities for personalising the GLE 63 S and GLS 63. Exclusive paint finishes – from high-tech silver magno and Patagonia red metallic to Ireland mid green metallic – add individual accents. In the interior, optional MANUFAKTUR leather appointments, carbon-fibre trim elements and special topstitching create an exclusive ambience. Together with the AMG Night Package II, they create an unmistakable appearance.
