More agile, more effortless: Steer-by-wire now available for the new Mercedes-Benz EQS Saloon

Mercedes Benz EQS 580 4MATIC | energy consumption combined: 19.5-16.2 kWh/100 km | CO₂ emissions combined: 0 g/km | CO₂ class: A*

  • Steer-by-wire is available to order in all EQS markets worldwide
  • In Germany, prices start at €2,500 excluding VAT1 / €2,975 including VAT2
  • Easier manoeuvring and parking, plus enhanced driving stability and agility
  • More comfortable entry and exit, greater sense of space and improved view of the driver display

As Mercedes‑Benz’s technological flagship and the brand’s most advanced all-electric luxury saloon, the new EQS continues to set benchmarks for innovation. It is now available with steer-by-wire technology, making Mercedes‑Benz the first German automotive manufacturer to offer this technology in a series-production passenger car. The new steering technology takes the driving experience to the next level and transforms the interaction between driver and vehicle. It dispenses with a mechanical connection between the steering wheel and the front wheels. Instead, the driver’s steering inputs are transmitted quickly and directly via an electrical connection, or “by wire”. In Germany, prices for this optional equipment start at €2,500 excluding VAT1 / €2,975 including VAT2. The package includes rear-axle steering with a steering angle of up to 10 degrees as well as a newly designed, flatter steering wheel featuring an innovative airbag structure.

The more compact steering wheel noticeably opens up the interior space, improves the view of the driver display and makes getting in and out of the vehicle easier. Available in black or, depending on specification, in beige, it further enhances the light and spacious character of the EQS interior. From the very first moment, it creates the brand’s signature “Welcome home” feeling. This experience continues while driving: the steering remains precise and intuitive, fully in keeping with the hallmark Mercedes‑Benz steering feel. At the same time, steer-by-wire significantly reduces the steering wheel angle required, particularly at low speeds, making manoeuvring and parking considerably easier. With a steering wheel angle of just 170 degrees from lock to lock, the system delivers a particularly effortless and intuitive steering experience. For 140 years, Mercedes‑Benz has been shaping the future of mobility, beginning with the invention of the automobile. With steer-by-wire in the EQS Saloon, this claim to technological leadership becomes tangible once again.

Steer-by-wire offers a wide range of advantages in everyday driving. Driving dynamics benefit from the technology, while manoeuvring and parking become even easier. This is because the effort required can be further reduced and there is no longer a need to adjust grip on the Formula 1-inspired steering wheel. The EQS combines sportiness and comfort even more effectively while further enhancing driving stability and lateral agility. Steer-by-wire works in combination with rear-axle steering of up to 10 degrees, creating a confident and highly intuitive driving experience. Undesired vibrations caused by uneven road surfaces, which were previously transmitted to the driver via the steering wheel, can now be eliminated.

In line with Mercedes‑Benz’s uncompromising approach to safety, steer-by-wire features a redundant system architecture with high-precision sensors, powerful control units and independent signal paths. Steering capability therefore remains available at all times. Even in the highly unlikely event of a complete system failure, lateral vehicle control can still be supported through rear-axle steering and targeted wheel-specific braking interventions via ESP®.

Just a few months ago, Mercedes‑Benz unveiled the new, substantially enhanced EQS Saloon. More than a quarter of all vehicle components have been newly developed, updated or refined. At the core of the model is a new next-generation electric architecture. This includes 800-volt technology, new drive units developed in-house, a two-speed gearbox on the main drive at the rear axle as well as larger batteries with optimised cell chemistry. The Mercedes‑Benz Operating System (MB.OS) transforms the EQS Saloon into an even more intelligent companion that understands, thinks ahead and evolves with its driver. MB.OS integrates and controls every aspect of the vehicle. This supercomputer uses artificial intelligence (AI) as well as powerful chips and is connected to the Mercedes‑Benz Intelligent Cloud. Through over-the-air updates, the software-defined vehicle remains continuously up to date.

As the flagship electric Mercedes‑Benz saloon, the EQS is the ideal vehicle for introducing steer-by-wire technology to series production. Together with MB.OS, advanced electric architecture and 800-volt technology, steer-by-wire further strengthens the EQS’s position as a showcase for the next generation of electric luxury.

Mercedes-Benz anniversary year “140 Years of Innovation”

Since Carl Benz filed the patent for the first automobile 140 years ago and Gottlieb Daimler built his motorised carriage shortly afterwards, Mercedes‑Benz has dedicated itself to constant innovation and to creating the world’s most desirable cars for customers. This ambition has driven every innovation – from the world’s first automobile in 1886 to the biggest product launch programme in the company’s history that is currently underway. With its passion for performance and pioneering power, excellence and an unwavering commitment to customer service, the brand has consistently shaped the future of mobility. The result goes well beyond engineering achievement – it creates the unmistakable feeling that runs through everything Mercedes‑Benz does: Welcome home.
